Ensure you have the right level of cover for your cruise with Just Travel Cover

Cruising is an exceptional way to travel, offering unique experiences at sea and various destinations all in one trip. However, many cruise companies now have specific requirements when it comes to your cruise insurance. Below is an overview of the general requirements and links to specific requirements for major cruise lines such as Cunard, P&O Cruises, Royal Caribbean, and MSC Cruises to ensure you are covered for your next cruise holiday, no matter who you are travelling with.

General Cruise Insurance Requirements

Most cruise lines require the following insurance cover and may ask for proof of your policy before you set sail.:

  • Medical and Repatriation Cover: Minimum cover of £2 million for medical expenses and emergency evacuations. This ensures you are covered for medical treatment and, if necessary, repatriation to your home country.
  • Pre-Existing Medical Conditions: Cover for pre-existing conditions is mandatory. Ensure your policy explicitly includes cover for any pre-existing conditions you have, failing to do so could void your insurance.
  • Cruise-Specific Cover: Benefits should include missed ports, missed shore excursions, and cabin confinement due to illness. These cover unique situations that can occur during a cruise.
  • Cancellation Cover:  Adequate cover to protect the cost of your trip. This protects you against financial loss if you need to cancel your cruise due to unforeseen circumstances.

To ensure compliance and peace of mind during your cruise, review the specific requirements for the cruise line you are holidaying with. To help you cruise with confidence, we have included some requirements of popular cruise lines below.

Cruise Travel Insurance Requirements FAQs

Frequently asked questions about Cruise Travel Insurance requirements.

Why do I need cruise-specific Travel Insurance?

Not all insurance policies cover cruises, so you should always check that when shopping around and ensure you’re covered for cruise travel. Particularly now as many cruise lines will ask you to complete a pre-sailing declaration that says you have Travel Insurance in place that provides a certain amount of cover. At Just Travel Cover all of our policies do cover cruises, but you must answer Yes to the cruise question – some of our policies also have additional cruise benefits, such as cover for missed ports, missed shore excursions, and cabin confinement due to illness.

What happens if I don’t have the required cruise insurance?

If you do not have the required Cruise Travel Insurance specified by the cruise line you are travelling with, you may be denied boarding. Cruise lines often check for proof of adequate Cruise Travel Insurance before allowing passengers to embark, and you may be asked for a copy of your policy and/or medical assistance company..

How far in advance can I book my Cruise Travel Insurance?

At Just Travel Cover we can provide quotations for cruises up to 18 months (548) days in advance.  We recommend securing your cruise insurance as soon as you have booked your cruise so that you have cancellation cover in place.
