Travel insurance is an important aspect of any holiday, especially when traveling with young children or those with pre-existing medical conditions.
Sheelagh was looking forward to her first family holiday, when her granddaughter didn’t listen on the flight over, when told to drink more water (we’ve all been there, right?). Unfortunately, for Sheelagh and her granddaughter, this resulted in a hospital trip.
We recently spoke to Sheelagh to find out in her own words, what happened:
“My family and I, including my 10-year-old grandson who was due to have open heart surgery the following month, decided to take a holiday to Tenerife. We made sure to take out Travel Insurance as a matter of course, but we never expected to have to use it. However, on our first day of the holiday, our 12-year-old granddaughter fell ill with a violent headache and vomiting.
We quickly called a doctor, who determined that she was suffering from dehydration. She was then taken to the hospital for treatment, where she received intravenous fluids. We were responsible for paying the fees for the local GP’s visit and the hospital treatment as they required payment upfront. However, thanks to our Travel insurance, we were able to get a reimbursement for this expense which was a huge relief.
The incident was a reminder of the importance of Travel Insurance, and how it can provide peace of mind and financial protection in unexpected situations. It was so reassuring to know that we would be able to claim the cost back. Despite the setback on the first day of our holiday, our granddaughter quickly recovered and we were able to continue with our plans, making lasting memories as a family.”
Sheelagh’s story highlights that not all medical costs incurred abroad are due to pre-existing medical conditions. Not drinking enough fluid on the flight over, or even around the pool on that hot day can result in a costly medical bill.
Luckily, for Sheelagh they thought ahead and secured their Travel Insurance in case something was to happen.
Medical costs abroad can be expensive, make sure you’re covered should the unexpected happen with a tailored Travel Insurance policy.
