France

It’s almost springtime in the UK, which can be the perfect time to head of for a ski trip.
And, according to IgluSki, the UK’s number one ski travel agency, France is one of the best places for a ski holiday in April.

Quieter pistes and warmer weather make France the ideal skiing destination in springtime, so whether it’s a family break in the Easter holidays or a last-minute (and cheaper) late season break, with the help of IgluSki we’ve picked out everything you need to know about skiing in France at this time of year, including what conditions you can expect and the best resorts for the perfect blend of sunshine and snow. And – of course – what to look out for when it comes to Travel Insurance.

Can I ski in France in April?

While Europe begins to heat up again in spring time, there’s no need to worry about a lack of snow.
The air up in the mountains is still cold and moist enough to produce plenty of white stuff.

According to IgluSki, Val d’Isère had an average snow depth of 276cm last April, and Les Arcs still had an average snow depth of 204cm weeks before the lifts closed for the season.

While nothing is ever guaranteed, the higher you go in April, the more likely you are to expect the soft, powdery conditions.

As well as the ideal weather, there are additional benefits to skiing in France in April too, such as many ski lifts stay open longer at this time of year, providing more time to enjoy the slopes. Plus, you could even top up your tan once you shed your skiing attire.

Which ski resorts are best in France?

IgluSki has created its own scoring system using historical resort data from snow-forecast.com, and has identified the following French ski resorts as offering the best conditions for April skiing – plenty of snow and lovely sunny weather.

  •  Chamonix
  • Les Deux Alpes
  • Les Arcs
  • La Rosiere
  • La Plagne
  • Alpe d’Huez
  • Val d’Isere
  • Val Thorens

If you’re looking for a fun-filled morning of skiing followed by a delicious lunch in beautiful sunshine, the above resorts will deliver. However, if you’d rather skip the sunny days for powder, head straight to the really high (but less sunny) resorts of Tignes and Val Thorens.

The generous snowfall, bright weather, vibrant nightlife and varied slopes really do make April the perfect time to head to France.
