New York
New York is one of the most famous cities in the world, and it’s on many people’s ‘must-visit’ list. With so much to offer, it’s no wonder. This vibrant city has also become the focus of many well-known TV and film locations, authentically filmed in the hustle and bustle of New York. If you’re planning a trip to New York, you should definitely visit these iconic locations. Before setting off on your trip, purchase New York Travel Insurance so you can relax knowing you’re covered.
Now, let’s dive into five iconic TV and film locations in New York, that are accessible to the public.
At the corner of Bedford and Grove Streets, you will find the exterior of the apartment building used in the opening credits of hit sitcom, Friends. Although you can’t visit inside, you can take pictures with the outside of the building where Rachel, Monica, Chandler, and Joey live. At its street level, is a Mediterranean restaurant ‘The Little Owl’ which happens to be the ‘Central Perk Café’. It is famously known for their chill out spot where Rachel worked, and Phoebe performed “Smelly Cat”.
Are you a fan of Sex and the City? Visit Carrie Bradshaw’s apartment on 64 Perry Street, as it happens to be on one of the prettiest streets in the West Village. Not only can this apartment be seen on the TV show, but it has also featured in the film. Fans can also visit the Greenwich Village boutiques and eat cupcakes from Magnolia Bakery to live like Carrie and her friends.
Along with much of the film, Elf was filmed all around New York City. However, one notable scene is Buddy the Elf visiting his dads work and eventually working there, located in the Empire State Building. It’s a very tall building, almost impossible to miss, and a very famous landmark. Due to the longevity as a staple, a lot of classic films have chosen to include the Empire State Building in their storytelling. Walter Hobbs also lived in an apartment building at 55 Central Park West, which is also the same apartment building used as Sigourney Weaver, Dana Barrett’s in Ghostbusters (1984).
The Gapstow Bridge in Central Park can be found in ‘Home Alone 2: Lost in New York’, where we meet the Pigeon Lady, who quickly becomes friends with Kevin and becomes the heart of the film. Serving as Central Park’s main visitor’s centre, Tavern on The Green is a restaurant that can be found in Wall Street (1987) and is across the street from Dana Barrett’s apartment in Ghostbusters.
This public library system holds nearly 53 million items, it’s the second largest public library in the United States and third largest in the world; there is no surprise it’s a famous film location. Its notable in Breakfast at Tiffany’s (1961). The exact filming spots within the library is such a common query, that the security guards know exactly where to direct tourists who visit. This film location is also reputable in Spider-Man (2002) where Peter Parkers’s uncle advises him “With great power comes great responsibility”, which quickly becomes his mantra, and soon after is the location of his canon event – his uncle’s death.
This famous landmark has played an extra in so many great films. The statue’s head was where the battle in X-Men (2000) took place, you can see it being slashed off and thrown onto Broadway by the giant monster in Cloverfield (2008). The torch fought the frozen tidal waves that swept over New York in Day After Tomorrow (2004) and took a stroll through New York City in Ghostbusters II (1989).
