The Canaries are a perfect for an island-hopping adventure. A 4–5-hour flight from the UK will get to the islands and there are 16 ports and 8 airports to help you make the most of a multi-island experience. Before embarking on your adventure, be sure to find Canary Islands Travel Insurance to have peace of mind on your holiday. It’s important to tell your insurance provider that you’re planning on island-hopping so that your Canary Islands Travel Insurance covers you; it’s best to be prepared.
Here’s your guide to island hopping in the Canaries.
The Spanish archipelago is a diverse destination with many holiday options, and so to get a feel for the culture and the extraordinary landscape, it’s recommended to stay for at least one week in the Canary Islands. If you are visiting the islands for a short break, you should limit yourself to two or three of the Canary Islands, you may even be able to push four, to ensure you soak it all in. Whichever way you decide to explore the islands, your adventure can last from a single day to a whole summer.
If you are planning a short island-hopping trip, you should begin your holiday in Gran Canaria. After exploring the island, spend some time in Lanzarote, which is nearby the island La Graciosa and its pristine beaches. You can then end your stay in Fuerteventura, where you will find easy flight connections back to the UK.
If you are on the islands for a little longer, we recommend you switch your time in Gran Canaria with your time on Fuerteventura, as Gran Canaria and Tenerife can be easily combined, with just an 80-minute ferry crossing between the two capital cities. Tenerife is neighbours with smaller islands, La Gomera and La Palma and is easy to travel to and from before you flight home from Tenerife.
El Hierro is a bit further away but worth the trip if you are on the islands for a bit more time. Flying is the best option as it is far quicker to reach to the island. To travel by ferry, it takes around 2 hours and 45 minutes (there’s no ferry services for this route on a Saturday) whereas its only 40 minutes travel time by plane.
Remember to take out Canary Islands Travel Insurance before your visit. Not only will it cover medical expenses, but it also protects you should your holiday need to be cut short. Here at Just Travel Cover, we compare prices from multiple insurers to help you find cover, whether it’s for one holiday (single trip) or you’re planning two visits, when an annual multi trip policy might be more cost effective. It’s best to take out your Canary Islands Travel Insurance as soon as possible; this will ensure you’re well-prepared for your holiday.
