October 26th marks International Artists day that honours the contribution of artists and the importance of art in our lives. We’re celebrating by looking at some of the best art museums around the world.

The Louvre – Paris, France

The Louvre is considered the best museum in the world by many. Not only is it the largest single-complex museum on the planet, but it also holds the most valuable painting in history, the Mona Lisa (1503) by Leonardo da Vinci. Many tourists also visit the Louvre to take a photo with the glass-and-metal pyramid structure, designed by Chinese American architect I. M. Pei. The large pyramid can be found in the main courtyard and serves as the main entrance to the museum. It has become a landmark of Paris. Whilst in Paris, be sure to check out the Eiffel Tower, Arc de Triomphe and Notre-Dame de Paris Cathedral. Visiting Paris with the family? Metropolitan “Met” Museum of Art – New York, USA

New York’s museum is one of the largest museums in the world with more than two million pieces of art, spanning the history of human culture. Alongside paintings and statues, you will also find musical instruments, suits of armour, historical artefacts, furniture, and costumes. The Metropolitan Museum of Art is also the venue for the Met Gala, one of the most prominent and exclusive social events in the world and one of the biggest fundraising nights in New York City. In theme with the Met, be sure to visit Fifth Avenue. Also known as Millionaire Row, it’s regarded as one of the most famous shopping streets in the world, with luxury labels such as Gucci, Tiffany and Hermes being on the list of stores. At and around Fifth Avenue, you will find Central Park. New York’s largest and most important park, it occupies 840 acres and extends about 2.5 miles. The park is the home of concerts, ice skating rinks, a zoo, large art gallery and a castle… It is that big!

The Tate Modern – London, UK

What was once the Bankside Power Station is now considered the jewel in the crown of modern art galleries in London. Converted to an art gallery in 2000 by Swiss architects, Herzog and de Meuron, it holds the nation’s collection of modern art from 1900 to the present day; it is in the top ten most visited museums and galleries in the world. The collection holds masterpieces of international and British modern art, including the work of Pablo Picasso. Tate Modern displays artwork according to themes not chronology. This means 21^st century art can be seen next to art from the 20^th centuries. London happens to be one of Europe’s most famous and vibrant cities and has been described as the city where old meets new (physically and culturally). Spot the iconic red telephone boxes, designed by architect Giles Gilbert Scott, who also designed the Bankside Power Station; make sure to take a photo inside one.
